The United Nations (UN) Middle East peace envoy on Sunday condemned the continued attacks on civilians after Israeli airstrikes on Beit Lahiya in Gaza killed dozens of people late Saturday.
”This followed weeks of intensified operations that resulted in numerous civilian deaths and an almost complete lack of humanitarian aid reaching the population in the north,” said Tor Wennesland, UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
The Israeli military said it stepped up attacks in northern Gaza in early October to prevent Hamas militants from regrouping.
A total of 87 people were killed or disappeared under rubble after an Israeli attack on Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza on Saturday, the enclave’s health ministry said on Sunday.
The Israeli military said it was investigating reports of the incident, which was the deadliest in months.
Gaza’s health ministry says attacks have killed hundreds of people since Israel’s campaign escalated.
