Yesterday, the 81st anniversary of the Igman March, one of the most important events in the National Liberation Battle during the Second World War, was marked on Mountain Igman, more precisely on Veliko polje.
Members of anti-fascist associations from the region, as well as members of the Association of Anti-fascist and Fighters of the National Liberation War (SABNOR) of Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH), gathered at Igman this year. In addition to them, a large number of younger generations could also be noticed at Igman this year, who decided to celebrate this important date from our history with their parents and other family members.
As in previous years, the SABNOR of Canton Sarajevo (CS) is responsible for the organization of the traditional march and special program on Igman.
Even earlier, the president of the Organizing Committee, Ibrahim Durmo, stated that the interest in this event is growing, year after year. This time, participants from various parts of BiH, neighboring countries, but also Austria, Germany, and Italy arrived at Igman.
After arriving at Igman, the column formed at the locality of Brezovaca, from where the gathered arrived at Veliko Polje, where they laid flowers and wreaths on the main monument. A ceremony was held at that place, and Albin Pibernik, the youngest participant in the 1942 march, addressed the public.
The Igman March is a military operation from the Second World War when the fighters of the First Proletarian Brigade from the siege of strong German forces in Romanija started to break through to Sarajevo. Their plan was to reach the then liberated Foca. The breakthrough began on January 25th. In two days they came to Sarajevo field. The most difficult part was the beginning of the ascent to Igman.
The crossing over Igman was carried out at night between January 27th and 28th, in deep snow and extreme cold. That march became legendary for the 40 severely frostbitten fighters who were transferred to Foca for treatment, where they endured the superhuman pain of amputating frozen body parts without anesthesia, Klix.ba reports.
