US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would issue an executive order requiring every voter to show identification.
“Voter identification must be part of every single vote. No exceptions! I will issue an executive order to that effect!” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, Reuters reported.
“Also, no voting by mail, except for those who are seriously ill and deployed far away in the military,” he added.
Trump has long questioned the US electoral system and continues to falsely claim that his 2020 defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. The president and his Republican allies have also made unsubstantiated claims about mass voting by non-US citizens, which is illegal and rarely occurs.
He has also advocated for years for the elimination of electronic voter scanners, favoring instead the use of paper ballots and manual counting, a process that election officials consider time-consuming, expensive, and significantly less accurate than machine counting.
In early August, Trump promised to issue an executive order that would eliminate the use of mail-in voting and voter scanners before the 2026 election.
The November 3, 2026, election will be the first national referendum on Trump’s domestic and foreign policies since he returned to office in January.
