Trump announces US will send Patriot Air Defense Systems to Ukraine

US President Donald Trump said the United States would send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help it respond to Russian attacks.

“We’re going to send them Patriots, which they desperately need,” Trump said, two weeks after Washington announced it was suspending some arms deliveries to Kiev.

“I haven’t decided how many, but they’re going to get them because they need protection,” Trump said.

According to him, the weapons delivery will be part of a deal involving NATO that will pay the US for the weapons it will send to Ukraine.

“We’re actually going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment, and they’re going to pay us 100 percent for it,” Trump told reporters.

The US president reiterated that he was “disappointed” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Putin has really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice, and then he bombs at night,” Trump said.

US envoy Keith Kellogg is due to begin another visit to Ukraine today.
