US President Donald Trump commented on the proposed Greenland deal.
“It gives us everything we need to get. It’s a deal that everyone is very happy with,” Trump told reporters, noting that it is a long-term deal.
“It is a long-term deal. It is the ultimate long-term deal and I think it puts everyone in a very good position, especially when it comes to security, minerals and everything else,” Trump claimed.
When asked about the duration of the deal, the US president said that “there is no time limit” and that the deal would last “forever”. He added that he had discussed the deal with other European leaders, but that nothing had been signed yet.
Asked to elaborate on what the deal would entail, Trump said it was a “complex” matter but that “everything would be explained later.”
The president stressed that he believed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with whom he spoke shortly before the announcement, had already reached out to Denmark and other members of the alliance to discuss the proposal. He reiterated that “the deal will last forever.”
Trump did not elaborate on whether rare earth metals would be included in the Greenland deal, but said cooperation with NATO and Denmark would be an integral part of it.
