U.S. President Donald Trump said that he would apply a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne, a move thatwould force French President Emmanuel Macron to join Trump’s “Peace Committee” initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.
When asked about Macron’s statement that he would not join the committee, Trump asked whether Macron had said that, Reuters reported.
“Well, nobody wants him because soon he is going to be out of office. I will put 200% tariffs on his wines and champagnes and he’ll join, but he does not have to join”, Trump said.
France intends to reject the invitation to join the initiative at this stage, a source close to Macron said on Monday.
Trump initially proposed establishing the Peace Committee last September when he announced his plan to end the war in Gaza. However, the invitation sent to world leaders last week plays a bigger role in resolving global conflicts.
According to a draft charter sent by the U.S. administration to nearly 60 countries, member states would be required to contribute one billion dollars if they want to extend their membership beyond three years, according to a document seen by Reuters. Governments reacted cautiously to Trump’s proposal, and diplomats said the plan could jeopardize the work of the United Nations.
Trump also said on Monday that he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Peace Committee.
