The draw for the 2026 World Cup was held in Washington on Friday, with US President Donald Trump playing a prominent role in a star-studded ceremony that will chart the path to glory for the competitors in the first 48-team tournament.

Before the draw began at the Kennedy Center, FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, who has built a close relationship with Trump, presented the US president with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

FIFA said the honor “recognizes the immense efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope to future generations.”

Trump called it “one of the greatest honors of his life.”
