A strong earthquake struck southwestern Japan today, and local authorities issued a tsunami warning.
The US Geological Survey said the 6.8-magnitude quake struck Miyazaki Prefecture at a depth of 48.9 kilometers.
Japanese authorities said the quake’s epicenter was in the Hyugano Sea.
The agency also issued a tsunami warning for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.
Later reports said the quake had a magnitude of 6.9.
