Ukraine used US ATACMS missiles to target Russian territory for the first time on Tuesday, Moscow said.

Russia said its military had shot down five of six missiles fired at a military facility in the Bryansk region, which was hit by shrapnel, but there were no casualties or material damage.

Ukraine said it had hit a weapons depot about 110km inland, causing secondary explosions. It did not specify what weapons were used.

US President Joseph Biden this week authorised Ukraine to use US medium-range missiles for such strikes, in what Moscow called an escalation that could turn Washington into a direct participant in the war and prompt retaliation.

It comes amid plans to mark 1,000 days of a war that has left soldiers weary on the front lines, air strikes on Kiev and fears over continued Western support as Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Military experts believe that the US missiles could help Ukraine defend the parts of Russia in the Kursk region that it has seized. Ukraine could use this as a bargaining chip, but it is unlikely to change the course of the 33-month war.

Potentially even more drastic changes are expected in the United States when Trump returns to power in two months, having promised to end the war quickly but not to say how.
