Up to 250 People die on the Roads in BiH every Year

Minister of Communications and Transport of BiH Edin Forto stated today in Sarajevo that we must seriously address the system through which drivers acquire knowledge and skills if we want to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

At a roundtable on the topic “Does the process of obtaining a driver’s license in BiH affect the increase in the number of traffic accidents?”, which was held at the Faculty of Transport and Communications of the University of Sarajevo, Forto pointed out that between 200 and 250 people die on the roads of BiH every year and that we are among the last in Europe in terms of road safety.

– If we start reforming the process of obtaining a driver’s license, it is possible that not everyone will like it, but it is necessary to raise the quality of that process – said Forto.

He stated that it is questionable whether just anyone can test a candidate for the driving exam or whether they should be professional and highly educated people.

Dean of the Faculty of Transport and Communications Amel Kosovac emphasized that improving the driver training system is one of the key elements of traffic safety.

The roundtable discussed issues related to the training of driver candidates, the organization and conduct of driving exams, the licensing of driving schools and instructors, as well as the role of competent institutions in improving existing practices.

The conclusions and recommendations from the roundtable will serve as an expert basis for decision-makers to improve current regulations and practices with the aim of increasing traffic safety in the long term.
