The threat of the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, to prevent High Representative Christian Schmidt from entering the RS and limit his freedom of movement is unconstitutional and represents another premeditated attack on the Dayton Peace Agreement, the Embassy of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina said today.
As they stated, this move by Dodik is also an attack on the constitutional order and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
They emphasized that the high representative is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the civilian aspects of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which obligates officials to cooperate with him, and he enjoys diplomatic status throughout BiH according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
“Mr. Dodik’s thoughtless threats and ridiculous claims about the status and authority of the High Representative are unacceptable and represent another step on the dangerous path he has chosen – the path of isolation,” the Embassy said.
They reiterated that the United States fully supports the High Representative and his use of Bonn powers when necessary.
The US will continue to hold accountable individuals who engage in anti-Dayton behavior, the Embassy added.
