US imposes Sanctions on Palestinian Authority and PLO

The United States has imposed sanctions on officials of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the State Department said on Thursday.

The US is “imposing sanctions that deny visas to PLO members and PA officials.”

A statement on the department’s website said the move was in the “national security interest of the United States to impose consequences and hold the PLO and PA accountable for failing to honor their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace.”

The US cited the PLO and PA’s failure to honor “their obligations under the PLO Commitments Act of 1989 (PLOCCA) and the Middle East Peace Commitments Act of 2002 (MEPCA) as the reason for its decision.

This allegedly includes “initiating and supporting actions in international organizations,” as well as “taking actions to internationalize the conflict with Israel, such as through the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), continuing to support terrorism, including inciting and glorifying violence (particularly in textbooks), and providing payments and benefits in support of terrorism to Palestinian terrorists and their families,”.
