The US military said it carried out strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats it says were trying to lay mines, despite a ceasefire in effect.
“American forces today carried out defensive attacks in the south of Iran to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” said the spokesperson of the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
He added that the US military is showing restraint during the truce, but will continue to defend its forces.
Iranian media reported several deaths after the US attack near the island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military has not released information on possible casualties or additional details about the strikes on Iranian targets.
Although the truce in the war with Iran is generally respected, there have already been several incidents and attacks by both sides in the area of the Strait of Hormuz.
In early May, Iran attacked American warships in the strait with missiles and speedboats, while the United States targeted targets on the Iranian mainland, reports DPA.
