More and more nature enthusiasts are choosing to explore Bosnia and Herzegovina’s growing network of via ferratas, making them one of the country’s fastest-growing forms of active tourism. While these protected climbing routes offer breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences, experts warn that proper preparation and safety should never be overlooked.
One of the best-known via ferratas in Mostar has seen a steady increase in both domestic and international visitors. However, rescuers and experienced climbers emphasize that every climb carries risks, especially for those attempting the route without appropriate equipment or professional guidance.
Via ferratas allow climbers to navigate steep rock faces using fixed steel cables, but they require concentration, physical fitness and a responsible approach.
Mountaineer Marko Bošnjak says experience is essential for anyone interested in taking up the sport.
“I have been trying to get into via ferratas more seriously for a long time. It’s a very interesting activity, but also a serious one that requires experience,” he said.
Experienced climbers also stress that the right equipment is crucial. Mountaineering and sport climber Klara Mitrić says no one should attempt a via ferrata without the necessary safety gear.
“Via ferratas should never be approached without the proper equipment. A safety harness, a via ferrata set with a shock absorber, and a helmet are essential,” she explained.
In addition to protective equipment, climbers are advised to wear suitable footwear, dress according to weather conditions, and carry enough drinking water. Beginners are encouraged to make their first climbs with experienced climbers or licensed guides who are familiar with the route and safety procedures.
Mountain rescuer Ibrahim Mariji says good preparation begins long before reaching the trail.
“It is important to know where the via ferrata is located, how to access it, check the weather forecast, make sure you have all the necessary equipment, and, if needed, seek advice from experienced climbers or local experts,” he said.
Herzegovina is home to a growing number of via ferratas that continue to attract adventure seekers from across the region and beyond, strengthening the area’s tourism offer. Despite their popularity and spectacular scenery, experts remind visitors that every climb demands responsibility, thorough preparation and strict adherence to safety rules, BHRT writes.
