The finalization of the process of the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina opens the way for the country towards the European Union (EU), said today in Sarajevo the chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber.

After the visit to BiH, Weber gave a statement to the media, saying that he came to Sarajevo with a delegation to contribute to resolving the issue of changing the Election Law and contribute to the progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he said he sees as a future member of the European Union.

On that occasion, he underlined that the finalization of the Election Law process opens the way for BiH towards the EU, and asked all parties involved in the process to find a compromise.

“We ask all parties to really invest in a compromise. We know it’s not easy. We visited political leaders yesterday and we respect their efforts to compromise. If we want to guarantee a good future for BiH in the process of European integration, we need this law and a willingness to compromise, “Weber said.

He underlined that failure in the process of passing the new Election Law is not an option at all, noting that this is “a historic moment not only for BiH, but also for the EU”.

“In such a situation, we need leadership, willingness to compromise and awareness of this historic moment. We have seen the political will, no one should get up from the table without compromise “, said the European official.

Weber also referred to the events in Republika Srpska (RS), saying that the moves of officials and institutions there were inadmissible for them, and that RS could not count on EU assistance if it continued with a policy that made the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina impossible.

“Regarding the events in Republika Srpska, we want to emphasize that the funds that the EU allocates for this region are not unconditional. We need progress, ”Weber said.

The visit of the delegation led by Weber comes at a time of talks on BiH electoral reform and unconstitutional decisions by the Republika Srpska National Assembly.
