In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), 20 food products are protected in accordance with the rulebook by which European Union (EU) legal standards have been adopted, it was announced by the Food Safety Agency of BiH.
Six food products are protected with the designation of origin, eleven with the designation of geographical origin, and three with the designation of guaranteed traditional specialty.
These traditional food products have been included in an interactive map of food products registered with the designations of origin, geographical origin, and guaranteed traditional specialty, which is available on the Agency’s website.
The map was created with the aim of improving the promotion and placement of food products registered with quality labels in the tourism sector.
Livno cheese, after being registered with the designation of geographical origin in BiH, met the EU requirements and was entered into the Union Register of Geographical Indications, making BiH the first country in the accession process to have a food product protected with a label at the EU level.
The Agency stated that a request is also being prepared for EU-level registration of Herzegovina extra virgin olive oil, which is protected in BiH with the designation of origin.
