The herds of wild horses galloping across the fields of Livno and the hills of the Cincar mountain are undoubtedly an enchanting sight for anyone who passes through the area. As many as 1,000 wild horses currently live in Livno, which was not the case in previous years. This is what Marin Mamuza, director and founder of the agency “Continental Adventure” Livno, told “Avaz”.
He pointed out that wild horses are a frequent occurrence throughout BiH and that they are mostly descendants of domestic horses that served people in agriculture. However, as Mamuza said, after buying the tractor, the owners released the horses because they did not want to kill them.
However, now they have freedom, but the problem is the lack of protection of this natural wealth. The system does not react to such things and the animals are left to their mercy, which is not good.
“As for the wild horses in Livno, they are currently not protected and no one is taking care of them. What I do know is that the last time they were protected was more than seven years ago, but that was short lived and everyone gave up on them. A few of us somehow try to take care of the horses, those who are sick, in order to give them a new chance to live,” says Mamuza.
The problem is not so simple, Mamuza adds, because they are looking for ways to protect horses, road users, and the habitats of these wild animals. The proposals are diverse, and one of them is the formation of a ranger service or an increase in the number of volunteers who would take care of the horses.
“We from the private sector are doing everything we can to “pressure” the public sector. Unfortunately, we cannot influence that, except through initiatives and private lobbying. Horses are currently being hunted for meat. It is common knowledge, unfortunately, and an increasingly common occurrence,” says Mamuza for “Dnevni avaz“.
