Senior US official for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Brendan Hanrahan met today with the highest state officials of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As announced by the US Embassy, Hanrahan met with members of the Presidency Željka Cvijanović and Željko Komšić, Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers Borjana Krišto, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmedin Konaković.

“In these constructive discussions, he stressed the importance of regional stability and encouraged the elected leaders of BiH to work together for a better future based on economic prosperity,” the announcement said.

This is a significant visit at a time when it is not clear how US policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina will be defined and set, especially in a situation in which an ambassador to the embassy in Sarajevo has not yet been appointed. The visit also comes at a time when lobbying from the RS, as well as the HDZ, has intensified with the aim of bringing about certain changes in US policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The messages conveyed by Hanrahan could significantly determine the political climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the coming months and point to new directions in American policy.
