The management of the port of Durres in the north of Albania has announced that it will open a tender for the construction of a new cargo terminal in its largest port during the first quarter of 2024.
Namely, the first phase of the project received a construction permit after the successful completion of the executive design of the new facility, the Port of Durres Authority announced on Tuesday.
The detailed project was prepared by a consortium consisting of the Dutch engineering firm Royal Haskoning DHV and the Albanian consulting firm Abkons, the Government of Albania announced earlier.
In the first 3 months of 2024, an international tender for the construction of the new port of Porto Romano will be opened. With the completion of the implementation project and the obtaining of the development permit for the 1st phase of construction, a panel consultation will be held with NATO representatives regarding the construction of the naval base, which is an integral part of this strategic project.
The new port will be built in the Porto Romano area in the northwestern part of Durres. The existing port in the southern part of the city will be transformed into a new tourist-residential project with a marina worth 2 billion euros, and the main investor is the company Emaar, based in the United Arab Emirates.
The term for the completion of construction is 5 years. It is also planned to connect the port of Porto Romano by rail with the intermodal terminal in Pristina and the intermodal terminal in Struga in North Macedonia.
This was confirmed by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of Albania, Belinda Balluku, who stated that along with the expansion of the port capacity in Durres, the expansion of the existing Tirana – Durres highway (SH2) is being prepared by building a stop lane with minimal land expropriation costs, the construction of a bypass around Tirana, which would upgrade it to the highway standard, and with a new railway to Pristina.
