Activist From Sarajevo: The Success Of The Flotilla To Gaza Depends On Support Worldwide

A press conference of the Movement to Gaza was held yesterday in Sarajevo, at which it was emphasized that the scale of destruction in Gaza must remain in the focus of the public and the media.

“More than 64.000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7th, 2023, among them more than 19.000 children. A large number of journalists were killed reporting, trying to awaken awareness and humanity in all of us to react to the horrors that are happening,” said Maida Zagorac, one of the representatives of the Movement to Gaza.

During the conference, a humanitarian worker and activist from Sarajevo, Boris Vitlacil, who is currently in Italy, where he is completing preparations with participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla for departure to Gaza, joined live. Part of the flotilla has already sailed from Spain, while Vitlacil will depart from Sicily.

“The success of the flotilla depends on the support we will receive from around the world. We are a small group of citizens trying to break through a humanitarian corridor, but every day we see that people around the world are getting involved. Dock workers in Genoa said they would block all ports if we lose contact with them, students are announcing they will block schools, and we also have a ship from Ireland that is providing legal support,” said Vitlacil.

Personal experiences from preparations

He added that more than 400 tons of humanitarian aid were collected in Genoa, although the initial goal was 30 tons.

“We cannot take everything with us, but this is an operation to open a humanitarian corridor and to allow humanitarian organizations, which are much better organized, to start entering Gaza,” he emphasized.

Vitlacil also shared his personal experiences from the preparations: “I met people who, during the war here, tried to save us, and now they are again helping people in Gaza. With me is another Bosnian, originally from Brcko, who currently lives in Germany. I hope that in the next reports we will speak together. There is also Vucko as our regional representative.”

Message of the flotilla

From the Movement to Gaza, they conveyed that the message of the flotilla is clear: when the world is silent, they set sail.

“The flotilla is not a military act, but a non-violent action of solidarity in accordance with international humanitarian law. The goal is not conflict, but opening a humanitarian corridor and paying tribute to the dignity of civilians in Gaza,” it was emphasized.

The Movement to Gaza is a local civic initiative that stands with the Palestinian people in the struggle for freedom and dignity. Through actions, campaigns, and international cooperation, they build a bridge of solidarity and send a clear message: justice and freedom belong to everyone. The Movement is an informal delegation of the Global Movement to Gaza, formed to support the participants of the Sumud flotilla from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
