The Albanian government has banned the Chinese social network TikTok for a year.

Albanian Minister of National Education and Sports Ogerta Manastirliu announced that a decision to temporarily ban TikTok was adopted at a cabinet meeting today.

Manastirliu said the decision was made after discussions with 65,000 parents in the country.

The ministry said the decision would take effect in a few days and could continue until the platform introduces safety and age standards for underage users.

The measure had been under discussion in Albania since November last year, when a primary school student stabbed 14-year-old Martin Cani to death in Tirana. The boys had argued over TikTok.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced after the incident that a one-year ban on TikTok in the country would be introduced in 2025.
