At the invitation of the University of Sarajevo, His Excellency Ambassador of Algeria to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mohammed Meraimi delivered a lecture on Wednesday, to professors, administrative staff, and students of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. The lecture, titled “Emir Abdelkader of Algeria and International Humanitarian Law: A Contribution to Codification and the Foundations of Practice,” focused on the historical and ethical significance of Emir Abdelkader’s legacy.

In his address, the Ambassador emphasized the Emir’s groundbreaking and lasting contributions to the early development of international humanitarian law, especially in the protection of prisoners of war and the preservation of human dignity during armed conflicts, drawing inspiration from the fundamental values of Islam.

He also spoke about the exceptional character of Emir Abdelkader, highlighting his deep piety, high moral principles, chivalry, and outstanding leadership. These qualities, he noted, helped shape the idea of humanizing warfare and, in times of peace, made Emir Abdelkader a powerful symbol of intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding – a bridge between civilizations in an era marked by division and intolerance.

At the end of the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Professor Mustafa Hasani, presented an honor to the Embassy of Algeria in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recognition of its efforts to strengthen cooperation between Algerian and Bosnian academic and research institutions and to deepen the friendly ties between the two nations.
