An Iconic Monument Dedicated To 77 Velez Players Has Been Demolished

At the Pod Bijelim Brijegom stadium in Mostar, a monument that was one of its more recognizable features has been demolished in recent days.

It is a monument that was erected after the Second World War in honor of 77 fallen Velez footballers, and after the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), it was adapted, and Croatian symbolism was added to it.

As reported by BiH media, the monument was demolished because the area leading toward the pitch itself is quite narrow for the large number of vehicles that, due to the nature of their work, must be as close to the field as possible. This primarily refers to vehicles used for match broadcasts, ambulances, police, and fire services.

Thus, Zrinjski decided to remove the monument, which had stood for decades on the path leading to the locker rooms.

The monument had been erected in honor of 77 fallen Velez footballers during the National Liberation Struggle (NOB), people who gave their lives in the fight against fascism, and for that reason, it had great symbolic value.

It should be recalled that the stadium was used by Velez until the beginning of the aggression against BiH, and since then it has been the home of Zrinjski.
