At least 19 people have been killed and 164 injured after a Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed into a school complex in the capital Dhaka.

Footage from the Milestone School and College, located in the northern suburb of Uttara, shows a large fire and thick smoke after the plane hit a two-story building.

The military said in a statement on Facebook that the F-7 fighter jet suffered a mechanical failure shortly after takeoff, shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time. The pilot was among the dead, the air force added, according to the BBC.

More than 50 people, including children and adults, were taken to hospital with burns, a doctor from the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery said.

The students at the school range in age from four to 18.
