At least one person was killed in the crash of a US military aircraft near the island of Yakushima in southwestern Japan, the Japanese Coast Guard said.
The Japanese media company “NHK” reported that the American hybrid plane “CV-22 Ospri” was trying to land at the airport in Yakushima while one of its engines was on fire.
The US military did not comment on media reports.
The plane was en route from Iwakuni Air Base in Yamaguchi Prefecture to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa.
A little earlier, it was reported that there were eight people on the plane at the time of the accident, but the Coast Guard later reduced that number to six.
