“Attacks on Returnees and their Property send a Message that they are not welcome”

After the break-in and vandalism in Enver Čustović’s house in Ključ near Gacko, the local government and the police would have to do much more to make the returnee community feel safer. It is necessary for the police to shed light on this case of burglary, in which the property of Enver Čustović, who recently completely renovated his house near Gacko, was almost completely devastated, said Duška Jurišić, Deputy Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As she emphasized, the shooting in the renovated house of Hama Krvavac in Gračanica in May and the burglary and vandalism in the house of Enver Čustović in Ključ this week, unfortunately, show the intention to harass returnees in the Gacko area.

“There are many ways to create a sense of security, first of all by regularly visiting returnees, restoring and improving road communications, public lighting, video surveillance in public places, regular police patrols, a concrete contribution to the renovation of housing units, and creating conditions for self-sustainability through incentives for activities that returnees are engaged in,” Jurišić said on social networks.

He points out that the returnee communities do not pose any problem to anyone, especially the local population. Attacks on them and their property, she warned, send a clear message that they are not welcome.
