Life often shows its cruel side, but the story of Benjamin Hadzic, a 25-year-old with Down syndrome, is proof that one should be a fighter and not give up, not give in to difficulties, but face them and overcome them.

People with disabilities face many challenges, from socialization to the moment they need to become independent and find a job.

Great interest

Benjamin is one of them, but he managed to get a job and become a useful member of the community.

He graduated from the High School of Environment and Wood Design as the best student, then he finished the craft for anurseries worker, and after that the craft for a horticultural technician. He was at the employment service for six years, and then he got his first job thanks to a project by the Canton Sarajevo (CS) Government.

”He applied to work in Cantonal Public Utility Company (KJKP) “Park” and has been there for the second month, he showed great interest in socializing, which is very important to me. He had to get a medical certificate from the Health Center so that he could work, but also that he needed an assistant. As a parent who has always been with his child, I am grateful because he showed exceptional results,” said Rasid Hadzic, Benjamin’s proud father.

He breaks down stereotypes

Shyly, Benjamin told he enjoyed his job.

”I like to work and I’m happy. I have a lot of friends who help me with that. My father is great support. From my first salary, I donated 150 BAM to the Association “Give us a chance”,”Benjamin stated.

Even though he was born with developmental disabilities, with the selfless support of his parents, he broke down stereotypes and set a roadmap for everyone that people with mental disabilities should not be isolated in their homes, but can contribute to society through their work and commitment.

Removes weeds

Benjamin is now working on cleaning nurseries within the company “Park”, removing weeds, transporting materials to the landfill, and working on arranging outdoor and indoor spaces.

”He’s really resourceful. He enriches nurseries and creates an ambiance to give these plants their beauty. It is not easy for him, friendly assistance comes in handy, but in the end, he always finishes the job successfully,” told Rasid, Avaz writes.
