Due to the harmful substances it contains, electronic and electrical waste is dangerous to human health and needs to be disposed of adequately. The awareness of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) about this has increased, but the problem is the insufficient number of locations for its proper disposal.
Mobile phones, computers, laptops, and household appliances are just a small segment of devices that are classified as electronic and electrical waste, which BiH citizens improperly dispose of, harming their own health and the health of other citizens, and it also leads to environmental pollution.
“Electrical and electronic waste is hazardous waste that needs to be specifically separated and recycled, because it contains certain substances that are carcinogenic, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc. This also needs to be properly separated so as not to exploit new raw materials, “ said Elma Babic-Dzihanic, Deputy Director of ZEOS Eco-System, the first operator of waste electrical and electronic equipment management systems in BiH.
The proper storage of this type of waste in BiH has been discussed for many years, and according to the interlocutor, in the past decade, there has been an increase in awareness among the population.
Proper disposal of electrical and electronic waste is currently possible in addition to Tuzla in Sarajevo, which has a container and a recycling yard.
