The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, took part today in Luxembourg in a commemorative meeting on the occasion of the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, which was held in the Tony Neuman Park.
This year, the commemoration was held for the eighteenth time in the organization of the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg, confirming the permanent dedication of the Bosnian diaspora to preserving the culture of memory, truth and justice. This year’s commemoration had a special significance because it was the first official commemoration held at the newly built memorial to the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, erected in cooperation with the City of Luxembourg and ceremonially unveiled last year.
Addressing the audience, Minister Konaković pointed out that this monument represents a permanent symbol of shared responsibility to preserve the truth and protect the dignity of the victims, stressing that the memory of Srebrenica is not the responsibility of Bosnia and Herzegovina alone, but a common European and human obligation.
He thanked the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg, the City of Luxembourg and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for their long-standing support for preserving the truth about the genocide, emphasizing that their support is not only an expression of friendship towards Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also respect for the victims and the values on which modern Europe rests.
He reminded that Luxembourg was among the first European countries to adopt a parliamentary resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, and that in 2024 it was among the co-sponsors of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica.
Speaking about the importance of preserving the culture of memory, Minister Konaković emphasized that Srebrenica remains Bosnia and Herzegovina’s wound, but also an examination of the conscience of all humanity.
- Denying genocide is not a different opinion. It is a continuation of injustice towards the victims. That is why the fight against denial is not a fight for the past, but for the future in which international law and judicially established facts will remain stronger than political attempts to challenge them – said the minister.
- He expressed special gratitude and deep respect to the Mothers of Srebrenica and Podrinje, pointing out that, despite the unimaginable loss, they preserved their dignity and persevered in the fight for truth and justice. Along with Minister Konaković, the President of the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Luc Frieden, President of the Association “Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclave” Munira Subašić, Vice President of the European Parliament Marc Angel, and representatives of the Committee for Srebrenica in Luxembourg addressed the commemorative meeting, which once again confirmed the importance of international support for the preservation of the truth, the culture of memory and the dignity of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
Before participating in the commemoration, Minister Konaković met with representatives of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Luxembourg at an informal meeting organized by the Committee for Srebrenica Luxembourg. They discussed the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country’s European path, improving cooperation with the diaspora, as well as issues of importance for citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina living in Luxembourg, including administrative issues, exercising the right to vote, and strengthening cultural, educational and economic ties with the homeland, announced the Public Relations Office of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
