The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, met today in Algiers with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Communities Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf.

The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with the good and friendly relations between the two countries, emphasizing that Bosnia and Herzegovina considers Algeria a key partner in North Africa and an important link for broader engagement in the African market. The joint commitment to advance the traditional friendship into a modern, strategic and economically oriented partnership was emphasized.

Minister Konaković recalled the strong historical ties between the two countries, including the fact that Algeria was among the first countries to recognize the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1993. In this context, he welcomed the opening of the Algerian Embassy in Sarajevo in 2022, and expressed his expectation that Bosnia and Herzegovina would soon open its embassy in Algeria. He also informed the interlocutor about the current political situation in the country, the challenges on the European path and the reform process.

A special focus during the meeting was placed on improving economic cooperation. The interlocutors noted that the volume of trade exchange is still below its real potential, and emphasized the need to intensify it and harmonize it with the traditionally good political relations. The possibilities of improving cooperation in the areas of energy, infrastructure and construction, agro-industry, food and processing industries, as well as industrial products were discussed.

The importance of intensifying political dialogue through the exchange of visits at high and highest levels was emphasized. On that occasion, Minister Konaković invited Minister Attaf to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After the meeting, Minister Konaković and Minister Attaf signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Institute for Diplomacy and International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Communities Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The signatories confirmed their readiness to further improve bilateral relations through the conclusion of key agreements, and strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, education, science and sports, as well as through mutual support in international organizations.
