BiH is at the very Top of the List of the largest Diaspora in the World

It’s no secret that people are leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). There is no accurate data from state institutions on the number of departures, nor is there a population census that could be compared to the period ten years ago.

Forbes published a list of countries with the largest diaspora, and out of a total of 151 countries, BiH is in second place.

”BiH, which declared its independence in 1991 during the breakup of communist Yugoslavia and subsequently experienced a bloody war, had 34 percent of its population living abroad in 2020,” Forbes wrote.

Guyana is in the first place, while Albania is in third place.

For Albania, they point out that, after 40 years of communism and international isolation, civil war and serious financial mismanagement kept the country in dire straits in the 1990s.

36.4 percent of Guyanese live abroad, while 30.7 percent of Albanians live outside their country.

”Countries currently or recently embroiled in war and conflict are predominantly featured in the ranking. Syria, a nation of about 28 million people, now has eight million of them – or about 30 percent – living abroad. South Sudan, where the civil war officially ended in 2020, has a diaspora share of 21 percent,”Forbes also wrote.

The United States (U.S.) has the smallest diaspora with only 1 percent, Avaz reports.
