The leadership of the Parliamentary Assembly of the NATO alliance was in Tallinn on Sunday to talk about the transformation of the Alliance and support for Ukraine ahead of the 75th anniversary of NATO.

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly Michal Szczerba (Poland) said that NATO must be transformed for the next generations “stronger than ever”.

As part of the comprehensive partnership reform of the Assembly adopted in Tallinn, the Standing Committee agreed to create a new status in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly for those nations aspiring to join the Alliance and to officially designate Ukraine, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia, as NATO candidates.

In two other important decisions, the Standing Committee decided to upgrade the Assembly of Kosovo from a parliamentary observer to an associate member, as well as to grant associate membership to the Parliament of Malta.

They also initiated steps to enhance dialogue and cooperation with the Alliance’s southern neighborhood and the Indo-Pacific region.

These changes to the partnership must be ratified by the full Assembly at the 2024 Spring Session in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the end of May.
