Black Flag shown in Formula 1 after 17 Years: Here’s what it means

Nico Hulkenberg, driver for the Haas team, received a black flag on lap 27 of the Formula 1 race in Brazil, causing much confusion among fans.

In chaotic conditions on the rain-soaked Interlagos track, where incidents and weather dictated the pace, Hulkenberg found himself in a situation that led to disqualification – the first black flag in an F1 race in 17 years.

The incident occurred when Hulkenberg slid off the track and had to receive assistance from officials who helped turn his car back onto the track.

Although Nico was preparing to continue the race, F1 rules do not allow outside assistance, which led to him receiving the black flag and having to end his race.

This is a rare occurrence in Formula 1, especially in the modern era. The last time a black flag was waved in a race was in 2007 when Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella were disqualified in Canada for both running a red light.

Max Verstappen ultimately took the victory, managing to handle the challenging conditions and win despite starting from 17th position, further strengthening his lead in the championship. This victory brings him closer to securing his fourth title, as he now stands 62 points ahead of his nearest rival, Lando Norris, with only three races remaining in the season, N1 writes.
