Borrell: Israel does not have the Right to Veto the Palestinian State

Israel cannot have a “veto right” on the Palestinians’ right to have a state, said today the high representative of the European Union (EU) for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell.

“One thing must be clear. Israel cannot veto the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination,” Borel said at a press conference in Brussels after a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

Borel added that the UN recognizes the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, stating that no one can “veto” it.

The EU High Representative said this a day after the meeting of EU foreign ministers, in which their Israeli counterpart Israel Katz also participated.

The meeting emphasized the need to implement a two-state solution, Palestinian and Israeli, in order to end the war and achieve stability in the region. Israel has rejected this solution until now, and this rejection was recently confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Israeli minister, for his part, said that he came to Brussels to secure European support in the war his country is waging against the Palestinian movement Hamas, as well as for the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
