Canada made a big Decision: It will recognize Palestine as an Independent State

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at a press conference that the country will follow the example of Great Britain and France and recognize Palestine in September.

The move came shortly after France and Great Britain made similar decisions, and Prime Minister Carney stated that Canada has always been committed to a two-state solution.

“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution. To an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,” Carney said.

He also emphasized the important role that the Palestinian Authority played in everything.

“Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th United Nations General Assembly. We intend to do so because the Palestinian Authority has committed to conducting much-needed reforms. Mahmoud Abbas has also committed not to militarize the State of Palestine,” he explained.

Any path to lasting peace for Israel, Carney emphasizes, requires a viable Palestinian state.
