In Titova street in Sarajevo, where Husein Hasani, known as Čika Mišo, cleaned shoes for more than 20 years, today his son Ramiz continues that job, turning it into family tradition.
Čika Mišo, one of the most important symbols of Sarajevo, worked as a shoe cleaner for six full decades. He first worked on Marijin Dvor, and afterwards on Titova street until the end of his life.
Ramiz, who is 64 years old, says that he is a retiree and that he worked in a communal company, but that he had a wish and the obligation from his father to continue working as a shoe cleaner.
Ramiz did not charge cleaning shoes for his first day of work. He says that the next day, the price will be symbolic and will not be defined. The cleaning of shoes will cost how much the customer considers to pay, clarifies Ramiz.
He adds that as a boy he worked with his father, and he worked at the places where Čika Mišo worked. However, before his father’s death he did not have ambitions to be involved in this occupation.
“I have a son and 3 grandchildren, and it is certain that after me they will also continue to work as shoe cleaners, all in order for Sarajevo to remember Čika Mišo”, said Ramiz.
He emphasized that people who saw him with Čika Mišo’s equipment and at his place liked the idea, but also approached him with amazement because he reminds them of his father.
