Zenica Seeks to Preserve and Modernize Čimburijada Tradition

Čimburijada, one of the most recognizable and important traditions of Zenica, continues to evolve as local stakeholders seek ways to preserve its authenticity while adapting it to modern tourism trends.

This issue was at the center of a panel discussion titled “Spring Dawn – Zenica Čimburijada: Between Culture and Tourism”, held at the University of Zenica Faculty of Philosophy. Representatives of academia, public institutions, and the local community gathered on the eve of the first day of spring to discuss the future of the centuries-old tradition.

Although Čimburijada has been celebrated for over a hundred years, it entered a new phase in 2024 after being included on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This recognition has brought both opportunities and challenges, particularly regarding its institutional protection and further development.

Alan Šabanović, senior assistant at the Faculty of Philosophy, emphasized the need to enhance the event’s tourism potential while safeguarding its core values. He highlighted the importance of enriching additional content, especially the manifestation segment, to make it more attractive to visitors.

At the same time, organizers stress that the essence of Čimburijada must remain intact. Mirsad Mujkić, president of the Zenica Citizens’ Forum, noted that the traditional early morning gathering – known as uranak – should not be overly altered, as it represents a unique and authentic custom.

Alongside hallmark activities such as the Zenica regatta, the event has expanded to include programs like the “Small Čimburijada” for children in local kindergartens, contributing to intergenerational transmission of the tradition.

Tourism officials also see untapped potential in promoting Čimburijada more broadly. Šaban Ibrišimović, director of the Zenica Tourist Board, pointed out that the traditional dish čimbur could be more prominently featured in local hospitality offerings, including hotel and restaurant menus, as a distinctive symbol of the city.

The growing number of visitors each year underscores the event’s increasing tourism value. Despite historical challenges, including wartime and pandemic periods, Čimburijada has never been interrupted, highlighting its deep-rooted significance. Today, many residents of Zenica continue to celebrate the tradition even beyond the city, further extending its cultural reach.
