Court rules Discrimination against Bosniak Pupils near Srebrenica

The basic court in Srebrenica passed a verdict in which the lawsuit filed by parents of children in Konjević Polje was accepted in its entirety due to discrimination in the educational process.

The court has found that discrimination exists and ordered the elementary school “Petar Kočić” to eliminate it, that is, to allow students of Bosniak nationality to study their native Bosnian language.

In the announcement from the Basic Court, it is stated that it is a first-instance verdict, which can be appealed before the District Court in Bijeljina.

The representative of the parents of the children in Konjević Polje, Muhizin Omerović, welcomed this decision of the court, which accepted their request.

“We want to point out to the public that this is a process that has lasted too long, that is ten years, and it is pointless. It is unreasonable that this is taking so long because there are three decisions of the Constitutional Court that prove that our children and are discriminated against in the education system of the entity of Republika Srpska. The decisions have never been implemented. This is a criminal offense because someone is obstructing it for so long,” Omerović told FENA.

He announced that they will once again urge the Office of the High Representative (OHR) to get involved in this case and help children and parents to finally solve this problem.

“This is a shame on our judicial system. Also, we will invite parents in the entity of Republika Srpska whose children are discriminated against to join us in the fight for children’s rights for a better and more normal education,” Omerović pointed out.
