Denmark paid 14 million euros to the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees

Denmark announced that it has made a contribution of 105 million Danish kroner (14.05 million euros) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to ease the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

In January, several countries suspended funding to UNRWA after Israel accused the aid organization of being linked to the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

Denmark was among the countries that announced they would wait for the results of the UN investigation before making a final decision.

“The disbursement of aid followed the initiation of a series of necessary UN measures and the decisions of like-minded countries such as Sweden and Canada, as well as the European Union, to disburse aid to UNRWA,” the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“There is currently no alternative to UNRWA in Gaza. In the long term, it will be crucial to initiate important reforms in the organization,” said Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Environment Policy Dan Jorgensen.

Several countries suspended their funding to UNRWA in January this year following Israeli allegations that 12 of the agency’s several thousand employees took part in a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The agency is investigating the claims, but has warned that cutting funding could spell disaster, AA writes.
