On February 4, 2022, the Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Ambassador Sven Alkalaj, signed the Joint Statement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Exchanged opinions

On behalf of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the statement was signed by the Permanent Representative of that country to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman. The signing took place at the premises of the Permanent Mission of BiH to the United Nations in New York.

In the conversation after the signing ceremony of the Joint Statement, the ambassadors exchanged views on the potential for improving bilateral cooperation, as well as on current topics within the UN.

Successful peace building

The Ambassador of Somalia was particularly interested in the experience of Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of successfully building peace and trust in a post-conflict society, as well as the rapid economic recovery achieved by Bosnia and Herzegovina after the war.

He expressed a desire to intensify contacts and exchange experiences in this regard. He announced the imminent opening of the Embassy of Somalia in Belgrade, which will cover our country on a non-resident basis.

During the multilateral meeting, both sides confirmed their full support for the efforts for the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda, ie the achievement of 17 sustainable development goals, with an emphasis on activities in the fight against climate change.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has so far established diplomatic relations with 182 UN member states, and intensive diplomatic communication is under way with the remaining 10 UN member states, with which diplomatic relations have not yet been formally established.
