Currently there are 16,500 tons of surplus weapons and ammunition and more than 40,000 pieces of weapons that no longer need to BiH Armed Forces, reported the Strategic Committee for Weapons, Ammunition and Explosive Ordnance in B&H on the 9th meeting chaired by the B&H Minister of Defense, Zekerijah Osmić.

The host of a meeting of the Strategic Committee for Weapons, Ammunition and Explosive Ordnance of B&H was the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The meeting focused on the necessity to accelerate the process of disposal of surplus ammunition and upgrading the safety and security infrastructure of storage sites.

According to the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, solving the issue of surplus weapons decreases the risks posed to the community.

“In 2015, we plan to dispose approximately 2,500 tons of surplus weapons, ammunition and explosive ordnance. The Ministry of Defense donated 550 tons of ammunition to the Government of Iraq. By this action, we have not only decreased the surplus, but have also become a partner to the International Coalition in its fight against ISIL”, said Osmić.
