Douglas Jones is the new ambassador of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina, writes the Montenegrin portal Žurnal. Jones is a diplomat who has served in the Western Balkans region for many years, and currently holds the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Douglas Jones, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, most recently served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.  He oversaw European security, including NATO, the OSCE, and Northern Europe, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as Arctic security.  Previously, Jones served as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission to NATO.  He served two other assignments as Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassies in Croatia and Montenegro.  His previous domestic assignments include Director of the Office of Peacekeeping, Sanctions and Counterterrorism in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, Director for NATO and Western Europe at the National Security Council, and as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in New York.  Overseas he also served as Senior Civilian Representative at the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and at U.S. embassies in Sarajevo, Dublin, and Tel Aviv.  This substantive regional experience, coupled with his extensive policy and management experience and demonstrated ability to lead large interagency teams, make him a well-qualified candidate to be the U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jones holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Bowdoin College and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Princeton University.  He is the recipient of numerous State Department performance awards, including a Presidential Meritorious Rank Award and three Senior Foreign Service Performance awards.  His foreign languages are Hebrew and Serbo-Croatian.
