German police said on Twitter that several people were injured after a car plowed into a crowd in Munich. According to Bild, 20 people were injured, two of them critically. Among the injured were children. A security conference is set to begin in the Bavarian capital tomorrow, with US Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arriving today.

The latest information from Munich police says that the driver of the car that plowed into the crowd was arrested at the scene and no longer poses a threat.

The driver crashed into protesters in a Mini Cooper.

He allegedly accelerated at around 10:30 a.m. and then plowed into the crowd at high speed. Today, many city employees are on strike, demanding an eight percent pay increase, higher bonuses and three additional days off.

A police investigation must now determine whether he drove into the crowd intentionally or if it was an accident. According to Bild, shots were fired before that. A major police operation is underway near the main train station and police are trying to establish what happened, the spokesman said without giving further details.

“The chief of police informed me that the vehicle crashed into a group of people and that unfortunately many were injured. I am deeply shocked,” said Dieter Reiter, mayor of Munich.

Police are appealing to residents and drivers to avoid the area of the accident, so that emergency services can work without interruption.
