Forty flights to and from Brussels have been cancelled after drones were spotted above the airport, causing two disruptions to operations last night, Belgian news agency Belga reported.

According to reports, 24 arrivals and 16 departures were cancelled, while Tuesday saw 41 flights cancelled. Between 400 and 500 passengers were forced to spend the night at the airport, public broadcaster RTBF said.

The Belgian government is expected to hold an emergency meeting over the repeated drone sightings.

Drones were again seen above the Kleine-Brogel military base in Belgium, which is used by NATO forces, on Tuesday. Local residents reported seeing six drones near the airport, Belga reported, citing Mayor Steven Matheï.

According to unconfirmed reports, the Kleine-Brogel base is one of the locations in Europe where US nuclear weapons are stored.

Drones were previously spotted several times over the Kleine-Brogel base last weekend.
