The BiH Deputy Minister of Finance and Treasury Dr. Edita Đapo received in Sarajevo today the Special Representative of the General Secretary of the UN for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Valstrom.

Margareta Valstrom spoke with the Deputy Minister from the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which is held every two years, and presented the main global forum for representatives of government, UN agencies, regional and international financial institutions, private sector, and scientific and academic institutions.

Valstrom stressed that disaster risk mitigation remains a humanitarian issue, which the majority of countries consider as a consequence of action. The goal is to ensure that it remains a priority for state and local communities. She added that it is important to provide a database of information on the repercussions of catastrophes and security mechanisms.

Edita Đapo said that all levels of government, as well as non-profit organizations have to work on prevention and to lower the existing risks of disasters. She explained how the Ministry of Finance and Treasury could develop cooperation with local communities in BiH.

Đapo said that the UN Disaster Risk Reduction Office (UNISDR) could lend a huge help to BIH in an advisory aspect and exchange information for a better quality assessment and monitoring of risks, and that this assistance is especially important at a time when BiH is preparing for European integration.
