londonThe Young Men’s Christian Association from Stoke on Trent, England built in this town a memorial for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica that is to be opened on Friday.

The memorial that will stand as a reminder of more than 8.000 killed Bosniaks, mostly adult men and boys, was designed by the members of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA North Staffordshire) and their colleagues from the University of Staffordshire, who previously visited Bosnia and Herzegovina and Srebrenica in order to learn more about the biggest genocide in Europe after the Second World War.

Aida Salkić-Haughton from the YMCA said that she is happy to be a part of the marking of the 21st anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

“We must teach young people how crime of hate can easily turn into something cruel and something that cannot be fixed,” said Salkić-Haughton.

“We invite people from the region to join us and pay tribute to the victims,” she added.

Jess Clark, one of the young members of this association, said that he was staying in Bosnia because he wanted to acquire experience, in order to be able to talk about genocide to other people.

“I have learnt that people should appreciate life and live every day joyfully,” Clark said.
