Reconstruction works under the EU-funded EU4Sport project to renovate sports halls in educational institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina started on 5 September 2023 at the School Centre for Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation Sarajevo. This is the first of eighteen educational facilities across Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose sports halls will be refurbished as part of this project, worth 2.1 million euros.

To mark the occasion and observe the start of works, Ambassador Johann Sattler, Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina visited the School Centre accompanied by the School’s Director Meliha Povlakić-Hadžiefendić.

The school’s sports hall is currently in a poor condition. The EU4Sport project will refurbish it completely ensuring better conditions for around 100 students, who are included in the education process, as well as children from other schools who come every day for individual rehabilitation. The refurbishment of the Centre’s sports hall is expected to be completed in November 2023.

“As a sports fan, the EU4Sport project is particularly close to my heart. All children deserve the opportunity to take part in sports activities. There is a strong link between physical and mental wellbeing, and investing in sport will help children become more energetic, more confident, happier future citizens. I am glad that the School Centre for Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation Sarajevo is the first school to be refurbished under this project and I look forward to seeing the results. This assistance is another clear example of the EU’s support and a further demonstration of how we are a reliable friend and partner strongly committed to all citizens of BiH”, said Ambassador Sattler.

EU4Sport will restore and modernize sports halls in 17 elementary schools in Ustikolina, Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Zenica, Visoko, Vogošća, Kupres, Tešanj, Rogatica, Teslić, Šipovo and East New Sarajevo, as well as those of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education in Sarajevo.

The core activity of the Centre for Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation Sarajevo is the classification, diagnosis, rehabilitation, education and training of children and youth with impaired hearing and speech. It has departments for preschool, elementary and secondary education.

EU4Sport is one of numerous projects of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which aim to strengthen the quality of education as one of the key elements of the country’s development.
