EU Proposes Triple Entry Fee For Foreigners, Will Also Apply To Citizens of BiH

The digital travel permit for foreigners to enter the European Union(EU) is expected to cost 20 euros, nearly three times the originally planned price, according to a proposal published on Friday.

The adjustment of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for nationals exempt from visas, which has not yet been introduced, comes at a time when the European Commission is seeking to increase its financial resources to fund a range of priorities, from defense to agriculture, the agency reported.

The European Commission stated that the change reflects inflation and additional operational costs of the program.

“The cost of the EU travel permit will also be aligned with similar travel permit programs,” stated the EU’s top executive body.

When it comes into force, the ETIAS system rules will also apply to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

The United Kingdom (UK) equivalent, known as Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), comes with a fee of 16 pounds (18.50 euros), while the United States (U.S.) Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) permit costs 21 dollars (18 euros).

The Commission added that there are also some exemptions from the scheme.

“Applicants who are under 18 or over 70 years old at the time of application are exempt from this fee,” it stated.

Also exempt are family members of EU citizens and family members of citizens of non-EU countries who have the right of free movement throughout the EU.
