The Commander of EUFOR, Major General Maurizio Fronda, hosted the Ambassador of Ireland to Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E Adrian Farrell, at Camp Butmir for discussions on the current security environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.

During the meeting, Major General Fronda reaffirmed the importance of continued international cooperation in maintaining peace, stability, and security across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Discussions focused on the evolving regional security environment, the importance of strong partnerships, and EUFOR’s continued role in supporting the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all citizens.

Major General Fronda also praised the contribution of Irish personnel serving within EUFOR under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Shane Courtney, highlighting their professionalism, commitment, and long-standing reputation as accomplished peacekeepers. He noted the significant contribution Ireland has made to international peace support operations over many decades, both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and across the world.

Ambassador Farrell reaffirmed Ireland’s continued support to EUFOR and stated that Ireland remained proud of all Irish personnel who have contributed to the country’s strong peacekeeping tradition. He also underlined Ireland’s continued commitment to supporting peace and stability throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following the meeting, Major General Fronda escorted Ambassador Adrian Farrell and Senator Joe O’Reilly to the Memorial Garden in Camp Butmir, where a solemn remembrance ceremony was held in honour of Garda Sergeant Paul Reid, who tragically lost his life in the service of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18th May 1995.

On the 31st anniversary of Garda Sergeant Reid’s untimely passing, a wreath was laid by Major General Fronda and Ambassador Farrell in memory of his sacrifice and dedication to peace. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the enduring commitment and sacrifice of those who have served in peace support operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the strong and lasting partnership between Ireland and EUFOR in support of peace, stability, and security across the country.
