Everyone in Gaza is Starving, including 50,000 Pregnant Women, says UN

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he expects the UN Security Council (UNSC) to show a “unified voice” for Gaza.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at the daily press conference that Guterres is increasingly concerned about the health of people in the Gaza Strip, especially women and children.

“The UN Population Fund – UNFPA has announced that everyone in Gaza, including 50,000 pregnant women, is hungry,” said Dujarric.

He pointed out that the UN and other humanitarian partners continue to provide food aid in the Gaza Strip despite all the difficulties.

He reminded that the United States of America (USA) submitted a draft resolution as an alternative to the draft resolution that Algeria plans to propose tomorrow for a vote in the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Dujarric said that the demands of the UN Secretary General are very clear, that he wants to see an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, unimpeded access to humanitarian aid and the release of all prisoners.

In the draft resolution, which Algeria plans to put to a vote in the UN Security Council tomorrow, it is requested to “immediately establish a humanitarian ceasefire that will be respected by all parties”.

Following Algeria’s announcement that it would put the draft resolution to a vote, US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the US was working on an agreement between Israel and Hamas that would ensure the release of hostages and a pause in hostilities for at least six weeks, and indicated that she would veto Algeria’s draft resolution.

Today, the US proposed a draft resolution to be negotiated by member states of the UN Security Council.
